If your power was cut right now, would you be prepared?

We all rely on the electrical grid to provide us with light and heat. In urban areas, this reliance is even greater. Emergency lighting is normally achieved by lighting candles. Hurricane candles are a popular choice as they burn for long periods, have a stable base and actually put out a decent amount of heat. Storm matches can be stored alongside your supply of candles for a reliable method of producing a flame.

If you are travelling outdoors – you must be prepared.

Whether it is a planned hike or you are forced to leave your home due to an emergency, it pays to have planned ahead. When you are outdoors, you need the ability to start a fire in order to cook, heat water, keep warm and perhaps draw attention to yourself. Lighters, matches and flints are all good options as fire starters. Being outside means you are competing with the elements. Even the smallest drizzle of rain or slightest breeze can render your lighter or matches useless, leaving you out in the cold. These Storm Matches are wind and water proof, making them the more robust option for matches. They have a thick, heavy striking end that will burn solidly for 10 seconds – more than enough time to catch your tinder alight.

How do storm matches work?

Not all matches are created equal. A normal box of matches might be fine for lighting some candle but they aren’t reliable in tougher conditions. Storm matches are designed to ignite and keep burning even in challenging circumstances. They have the same strike tip that uses friction to ignite as any other match but have a longer, thicker stick with a combustible compound that reaches at least half way down. The compound is a self-contained and self-sustained exothermic chemical reaction that produces a longer lasting, strong flame even in windy or wet conditions.
