Description

Fuel tablets were originally developed in the 1930’s for use by soldiers to reheat their field rations. These fuel tablets have a high energy density, burn without smoke and leave no ash. They are also extremely lightweight and compact which is why they are a popular fuel choice for portable stoves used by outdoor enthusiasts, the military and other emergency responders.

Fuel tablets are designed to fit into portable stoves or placed directly under a pot in order to boil water or heat food. The tablets have been known to leave a residue on the bottom of your pot. To remove this, you can clean the pot with an alcohol solution. Alternatively wipe a small amount of dish soap on the bottom before applying the flame. When finished, a damp cloth can remove the soap and residue.

The StanSport Fuel Tablets uses the active ingredient is Hexamethylenetetramine which is safe, easy to burn, odourless, smokeless and non-toxic. Each tablet burns for approximately 12 minutes and provide enough heat to boil 16 ounces of water. Generally fuel tablets are best for boiling water and reconstituting dried foods rather than actual cooking. One of the definite up sides to solid fuel tablets are their portable function – each tablet only weighs about half an ounce, making them perfect for an emergency bag or your camping gear.

While the fuel tablets are easy to light and burn in most conditions, using a firescreen or wind block will improve the stability of the flame and keep the heat concentrated. You can purchase fire screens or easily make one yourself. An easy makeshift fire screen can be constructed out of aluminium foil or an aluminium roasting pan. To determine the height of the screen, wrap the aluminium around the pot leaving a ¼ inch gap in between. Cut holes in the bottom of the aluminium for ventilation. Clip the top and bottom together and place around the pot and fuel tablet as a wind breaker.

Fuel Tablets as a fire starter

Fuel tablets don’t just have to be used solely with a portable stove. They are easy to ignite so make a handy fire starter as well. You can shave the tablet with a knife to form flakes to sprinkle into your tinder or light the whole starter to build a larger fire.
