A hard hat is a type of helmet and should be part of the protective gear worn by C.E.R.T volunteers and individuals responders. Hard hats are normally worn by construction workers to protect them from falling objects, impacts due to other objects, debris, electric shocks.

These helmets are made from hard molded plastic in a contemporary cap style. They feature a rolled edge which channels rain water to drain off the bill – much like a gutter, which is helpful during poor weather.

The hard hats work through the use of suspension bands inside the helmet. This helps to spread the force of impacts over the top of the head. This band provides a pocket of space between your head and the hard shell of the helmet which reduces the spread of impact from the falling object to your skull.

These C.E.R.T helmet shells come with a mid-line ridge to reinforce the shell and improve impact resistance.

How do you wear a hard hat properly?

The ideal fit is where there is some space between the hard shell and the internal suspension band, enough to allow air to flow through. You want the helmet to be a snug fit but no uncomfortably tight. Most helmets have a mechanism for adjusting the fit of the suspension band. When placing the hard hat onto your head, make sure the ‘bill’ or cap is at the front. It is possible to wear the hard hat backwards and this will make the helmet less effective.

During colder weather, it is best to use a thin layer underneath rather than bulky beanies. Specific liners are better as they have been designed to fit securely without affecting the functionality of the hard hat.

How to clean and store your hard hat

Simply clean your hard hat shell and inner suspension band with warm water and mild soap. Rinse after washing and wipe dry or air dry thoroughly. Do not use abrasives or solvents as these can weaken the plastic of the helmet. If your hard hat has been dirtied by tar or sap to the point it is not useable, it is best to replace that component.

How often do hard hats need to be replaced?

Hard hats are well designed and durable to meet the demands of the job. However several aspects can affect the life span of a helmet such as exposure to sunlight, chemicals temperatures and use. While hard hats that are subjected to high levels of wear and tear may need to be replaced more frequently, the recommendation is usually every two to five years. It’s best to keep an eye on your hard hats integrity by checking the unit before wear for any signs of weakness, age or stress.
