Planning for Pets in a Disaster

Planning and Preparing:

Do not leave your pets behind. They cannot take care of themselves and it is not safe for them or others. If it is not safe for you, then it is not safe for them.

Before a disaster happens, contact your Local Emergency Management Office and ask for a list of shelters in the area. Remember that not all shelters for people will take pets. Red Cross shelters will not accept pets because of health and safety concerns although service animals will be allowed.

The Animal Control Officer in you town can help you with the list of shelters. Identify which veterinarians, relatives, friends or boarding facilities can care for your animals in an emergency.

Make a list of names and phone numbers. Know which motels and hotels on your route will accept pets in an emergency. Call ahead if at all possible to make a reservation.

Emergency Supplies for Pets:

Response Kit for Pets should contain leashes, food, water, bowl, cat litter, pan, medical records and medications.

A first aid kit, current photos of your pets, feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems, pet beds, toys and number of veterinarian.

Make sure your pets have Identification Tags and the proper up to date Vaccines. Bring proof of vaccination to the shelter with you. Make sure both cats and dogs have secure collars with their names and your name on them.

After the event passes the behavior of your pet may change. They may become protective, aggressive or defensive.  Keep them close after a disaster and if they have persistent problems, call your veterinarian.
