National Weather Service

Mission Statement:

The National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. NWS data and products form a national information database and infrastructure which can be used by other governmental agencies, the private sector, the public, and the global community.  -

The National Weather service used to be known simply as "The Weather Bureau" and is not one of sixteen agencies within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NWS maintains website with a number of weather observations, forecasts, climate predictions, as well as information on a valuable tool to the public, which is NOAA Weather Radio.

Weather Radio:

NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts on fixed frequencies in the VHF radio band, providing weather updates and alerts. Many radio manufacturers offer these frequencies as a feature on portable models.

Emergency Alert System:

NWS works with the Federal Communications Commission in providing the Emergency Alert System to the public, providing information on all hazards, be it weather or natural disasters including earthquakes.

Please see for more information on NOAA Weather Radio, and contact your favorite survival gear supplier to review radio models with the important weather alert feature. This is part of your survival needs in the event of a natural disaster in your area.
