The American Red Cross have described house fires as America’s biggest disaster threat. In fact on average 7 people die every day in a house fire and 36 people are injured. Having the right tools will help you protect yourself and your family and could mean the difference between life and death.
How to Escape a Fire
Fire experts say you only have two minutes to escape a house that is on fire. With such a frighteningly short timeframe you need to know the basics on how to safely escape a fire.
- Make sure you have working smoke alarms around your house. There are different kinds of alarms, namely ionization and photoelectric. They detect fire in different ways so experts recommend having both kinds as a fail-safe. Ensure you place a working alarm in each bedroom, kitchen and living areas.
- Make an escape plan. Everyone in your home should know at least two different ways to escape every room in the house – normally through doors or windows. Once you have escaped, have a pre-planned area for everyone to gather.
- Hold practice fire drills and time them! Two minutes does not give you long enough to stop and think so once you have your plan in place – practice it. Make sure everyone evacuates the house safely while staying low to avoid any smoke.
5LB Heavy Duty Plus Fire Extinguisher
Ideal for the home or office, a fire extinguisher allows you to prevent smaller fires engulfing your home. To use a fire extinguisher firstly always read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiarized with its parts.
Use the PASS method when attempting to put out a fire:
P – Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher which unlocks the mechanism and allows you to discharge the contents of the extinguisher.
A – Aim at the base of the flames. This is where the fuel source is so in order to put out the fire, extinguish the fuel.
S – Squeeze the lever slowly to release the extinguishing agent.
S – Sweep from side to side. Use a slow, steady, sweeping motion across the width of the flames. Continue to spray in this way until the flames are gone.
Remember to stay a safe distance from the fire and always wait once it is extinguished as sometimes it may re-ignite.

Fire Blanket with Cover
A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish small fires. It consists of a sheet of fire retardant material which is placed over a fire in order to smother it.
Fire blankets, along with fire extinguishers, are key fire safety items that can be useful in case of a fire and should be stored in hazardous areas like the kitchen for quick access. This non-flammable blanket can withstand temperatures up to 900 degrees. Due to its simplicity, a fire blanket may be more helpful for someone who is inexperienced with fire extinguishers. Walk up to the small fire and drape the blanket so it covers the entire area, cutting off the oxygen supply.
Alternatively they can also be used to wrap around a person whose clothes have caught alight.
Fire Escape Ladder
Ensure you have as many emergency exits planned as possible in case of a fire. You need to evacuate within the first few minutes of a fire in order to survive. If you live in a multi-storey building it is recommended to store emergency ladders.
We stock a 2 storey (13 foot) and 3 storey (25 foot) fire escape ladders. These are tangle free and quickly attach to any window for simple use. It is recommended to store escape ladders in convenient locations around the home in all additional levels in order to provide a secondary escape route.
X Caper Mask
Smoke inhalation is a serious and dangerous condition affecting survivors of fires. An effective smoke mask like the X Caper is your best defense against the toxins and particles contained in smoke. It is recommended that you store several masks around the home and office for quick access during an emergency.
The mask is effective for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes or longer depending on the conditions and the type of filter involved. Thousands of professional firefighters use the X caper filter to protect them from harmful gases and particulate when performing their jobs, so you know this is the best product out there.
The X caper® Emergency Mask is an advanced filter paired with a simple and convenient design. Using patented Whiffs® moist filtration technology, the X caper Mask delivers unparalleled protection by absorbing hazardous toxins, such as Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Cyanide and 100% of particulate matter contained within smoke from house fires.
There is specially formulated material inside filter to trap particulates and absorbs gases and vapours before they can be inhaled – causing harm to your tissues. This means that breathing remains free and unhindered while wearing this smoke mask.
It works because the elements used inside the filter are negatively charged polystyrene beads and an all natural plant extract. Particulate matter in smoke carries a positive charge and so is attracted to the specially formulated elements in the filter. A secondary action also works to catch larger particles as the gel inside the filter is tacky, causing bigger flakes of matter to get stuck. This technology is effective at trapping particulate matter before it reaches your mouth and lungs.
