If an earthquake, hurricane, drought, winter storm, or other disaster strikes your community, you might not have access to water for days or even weeks.

Having an ample supply of clean water is a top priority in an emergency. You can take peace of mind knowing you will be able to provide for your family, school or business.

If supplies run low, never ration water. Drink the amount you need today, and try to find more for tomorrow. You can minimize the amount of water your body needs by reducing activity and staying cool.

Water Purification Tablets

Water often looks perfectly clean but can harbor bacteria, viruses or other microbes that will make you very sick. Any outdoor enthusiast knows that while a beautiful running stream looks enticing, drinking it without treatment is a mistake that can cost your life. The same goes for the water running from your tap at home after a natural disaster – bad storms, floods, fires, earthquakes can all disrupt water sources and make them unsafe to consume for a number of reasons.

When you are unable to trust the water your normally consume, you need to have a plan in place to create safe water.

Water purification tablets are a great answer to the water problem. They are easy to carry with you while you are hiking through the forest and just as easy to store at home, the office or in your car in case of emergency.

Water Purification tablets are generally either based on an iodine formula or a chlorine formula. Both types of purification leave a slight taste in the water but you can purchase other additives to remove those flavors.

Including the Potable Aqua tablets in your emergency plan will give you another effective and reliable method to producing water in a crisis.

Created by the U.S Military during the second World War, potable aqua was so effective that it is still being used now. It has remained a popular choice for the military and emergency response teams, as well as people travelling or planning an outdoors trips due to the easy to carry nature and the success at reducing the risk of become ill from water bourne pathogens.

The tables employ an iodine based formula to sanitize water and make it suitable for drinking within 30 minutes of treatment. It employs a two step process using iodine (I2) and hypoiodous acid (HIO). Both are individually effective germicidal compounds that work by destroying a microorganism’s cell wall which ‘kills’it or makes it inactive. Once this process has occurred, the water is safe.

How to Use Potable Aqua

Drop two tablets into 1 litre/1 quart of water. After 5 minutes the tablets will have dissolved into your water. Once that has happened, shake the container forcefully and make sure that some of the water washes over the lid as well as the cap and threads at the opening of your bottle. This is to ensure that all micro-organisms present in those areas will be sanatized. Now you just need to wait a further 30 minutes and your water is safe to drink. A single bottle of potable aqua makes up to 25 litres of clean water and can be kept in your survival kit for four years.

Filter Straws

Filter Straws are popular because they are so simple to use and you can easily carry one in your pocket or backpack at all times. All you do is insert the straw into your water source, and drink. Alternatively, you can fill a water bottle and use the straw to drink from that for a portable option. Water straws are not just used in emergencies but are toted by outdoor enthusiasts or even used every day to simply improve the quality of your drinking water.

The Seychelle Pure Water Filter Straw is a highly recommended product because it removes basically all pollutants, protozoa, viruses and bacteria found in water sources. Another advantage is that it filters out solid materials as well. When you are sourcing water from a well, a stream, river or pond – there will be debris like silt or plant matter suspended in the water. These hold harmful organisms but also make the water taste strange. A filter straw will remove those elements for a much more pleasant drink. It can filter up to 25 gallons of water before it needs to be replaced.

Another popular filter straw is the H20 Survival Straw. This product will produce a staggering 2000 liters of safe water, that’s 530 gallons. This straw has a special filtration process to remove most common contaminants like sediments, pollution and micro organisms for water that is pleasant tasting, clean and crystal clear. Water goes through 11 stages of filtering to ensure you will always have a safe water source.

Water Preserver

Unfortunately, stored water does not actually last forever! Over time, small amounts of bacteria or viruses can multiply inside your storage containers resulting in spoiled water that will make you sick. It is recommended that untreated water is disposed of every 6 months and completely replaced – including a total sanitation of your water barrel.

Often bleach is used to kill organisms in the water and make it ‘safe’ however there is a better, safer way. The Water Preserver solution has been formulated to extend the storage time of water by killing viruses, mold, bacteria and fungus spores that are already in the water as well as preventing them from developing over time. This solution has been rigorously tested by the Environmental Protection Agency and is an extremely popular product due to is effectiveness.
