Besides water and adequate shelter, food is the other great necessity. During an emergency or disaster, your regular food supply may disappear. There can be disruptions to the transportation system or to the actual food supply. Regardless, it pays to have an emergency supply of food that will provide you and your family with enough meals for at least a week.
Why Dehydrated Food?
Dehydrated food is probably the most efficient way to store food. Because the dehydrating techniques have become quite sophisticated, dehydrated food now has a shelf life of 25 years or more. Previously, quite a bit of moisture was left in dehydrated food; it was actually flexible since there was up to 30% water still in the product. The type of dehydrated food that you choose will depend on the kind of meal you will want to eat. There are fairly basic dehydrated foods available that will provide adequate nutrition during an emergency, such as dried eggs, cheese, vegetable protein, pasta, and more. These are generally packaged in 2 ½ or 10 pound cans. Bear in mind that once the cans have been opened, the integrity of the food has been compromised and you will have to use it up within a certain time frame. In some cases, it might be more practical to purchase the smaller cans, rather than have some of the larger go to waste.
Besides these canned powdered foods, there are also dehydrated meals available. These are generally packed to provide several servings per package. These foods can be quite tasty and include such meals as Beef Stroganoff, Lasagna, and Chicken Ala King. To use this type of dehydrated food, you will need to add water to the dehydrated food, heat the mixture, let it sit, then eat.
Storage Is Important
Just as important as having an emergency supply of dehydrated food in the house is how you store it. The great destroyer of dehydrated food is heat, and the hotter the conditions, the shorter the time that the food can be safely stored. Your dehydrated food supply should be stored at 70 degrees F or lower. While food kept at these temperatures can last for decades, when the same food is subjected to temperatures over 100 degrees F, the shelf life can fall to little over a year. A bit of care in storing your dehydrated food supply will help assure that it is there when you need it.
