Bioterrorism Preparednesss
What is Bioterrorism?
It is important to remember that most disaster take the same amount of planning and often use the same methods. Planning for a bioterrorist attack may have a few different steps but as a rule it is always important to have a plan and emergency supplies.
A bioterrorist attack is the deliberate release of viruses, germs (agents) or bacteria that is intended to cause illness or death. Some agents that you may be familiar with are:
Smallpox can be spread from person to person and anthrax cannot.
Bioterrorism Agents
· Category A
These agents are the highest risk to public, can easily be spread from person to person. They can cause high death rates, panic and social disruption.
· Category B
This category is the second highest priority because they are easy to spread, result in moderate death and illness rates.
· Category C
Category C contains emerging pathogens that can be engineered and are the third highest priority. They are easily produced, available and easy to spread. They have a high rate of mortality and major health impact.
Preparing
You can buy a response kit or make your own with items you already have around the house. Keep in plastic bin, back pack, duffle bag or any other easy to carry water proof container. It will be important to be able to grab it in case you need to evacuate. It will also be important if you need to shelter in place.
Water is the most important item to have in case of any emergency. Each person should have one gallon of water per day for at least three days. *Chlorine bleach can be used for disinfecting water. Nine parts of water to one part bleach. Do not use scented bleach, color safe or any other with added cleaners.
You should store at least a three day supply of non-perishable food that requires on refrigeration, preparation or cooking.
