Description

Nylon is a synthetic material – more specifically a thermoplastic which can be moulded when hot and solid when cooled. Nylon has served as a substitute for hemp, cotton or silk.

The benefits of nylon rope include:

Nylon rope is highly elastic or can stretch and bounce back very well. This means it has the ability to absorb tremendous shock loads which would break other types of rope like natural fibres.

Its synthetic nature means the rope has a smooth surface that doesn’t twist or unravel. This results in a rope which wears well and tends to be resistant to abrasions.

Nylon cord or rope can absorb water and loses up to 15% of its strength went saturated. Despite this, it is resistant to mould, mildew and rot and it regains its full strength when dried. For these reasons, nylon rope is still used in water settings as mooring lines or anchor lines for example.

Nylon is also resistant to UV rays – or sunlight which makes it perfect to use in outdoor settings as it can withstand exposure to the elements.

It’s also resistant to oil, gasoline and chemicals like weak acids. For these reasons, nylon is a great choice for sling rope, mooring lines, net rope, tie downs, tow ropes and safety lines.

Nylon rope should be stored in a cool, dry place. To prevent kinks, its best to store the rope in a coil. To stop the ends of the rope fraying or splitting you can bind the end of the rope with twin in a process called whipping, use tape or heat shrink tubing. The ends of plastic ropes like these ones tend to be melted and fused solid to prevent unravelling.

The average life span of nylon rope is about five years and serious inspections should be made frequently after that point to ensure the rope is safe to use.

Safety checks should also be made after sharp or sudden jolts to the rope. If the rope shows signs of deterioration like fraying or splitting, it should be discarded or used for non load bearing tasks.
